Microsoft's AI assistant built into Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams — strongest where your work already lives in Microsoft 365.

Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant embedded in the Microsoft 365 applications — Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint. Its superpower is context: it can summarize the meeting you just had, draft a reply to the email thread you are reading, and answer questions across documents in your tenant, all under your existing Microsoft security boundary.

Its limits matter equally: it is not a custom application platform, it does not ground answers in a controlled document set with citations and refusals, and restricted data workflows still need local processing. The right mental model is a productivity layer over the Microsoft work you already do — excellent at that, and not a substitute for purpose-built systems.
